Bristol based trumpeter Andy Hague has been using the name Double Standards for his quartet gigs for some years, the original idea having been to build a repertoire of less commonly played jazz standards. His CD of the same name is s more varied, consisting of four standards plus Nick Drake's River Man, Wayne Shorter's United, four new originals from 2020 plus two older tunes, Blue Swinga [based on Kenny Dorham's Blue Bossa] and Damon Blues, a nod to trumpeter Damon Brown.
Over the past 25 years Andy Hague has become well known in Bristol both as a performer and as organiser of weekly jazz venue The Be-Bop Club. Besides his jazz activities he has played in many other settings, including the albums by Portishead and for theatre, tv and film productions. In 2016 he appeared as part of the Pee Wee Ellis and Fred Wesley Back To Jazz Big Band, performing at Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival and Ronnie Scott’s Club. 2017 saw repeat appearances at both venues as part of a big band backing USA trumpet legend Bobby Shew in a programme celebrating the centenary of Dizzy Gillespie’s birth. Andy is also well known as a jazz educator, having taught under the banner of Bristol Jazz Workshops for over a decade. This has led on to tutoring for several jazz summer schools and residential weekends, including CL Jazz, Music For You, Gloucester Academy of Music, Dartington and Falmouth-Yamaha.
